I’m taking a note from Recipes Happen blogger, Bonnie, and adapting my ‘3 Things That Make Me Happy Today’ (check out the earlier posts) into a Saturday Upside with a bonus visual. Some friends and I decided awhile ago to stop focusing on the negative and to take a moment to be grateful for at least three things on a daily basis no matter how small. It’s been a wonderful exercise so far as it keeps me focused on staying positive and keeping my mood light. Like I said to my friend Gizelle the other day, I’m a reformed downer. And that’s the truth. 🙂
Bonnie’s challenge is to post a picture that reflects the upside of an otherwise negative situation each Saturday. Now, this is something I can really embrace and I’m excited to participate! So here’s my upside for today.
I decided on a whim to head the Union Square Greenmarket this morning despite the threat of massive thunderstorms, possible tornadoes, and basically the wrath of God as the weather forecasters made it sound on the news. I planned to take some lovely pictures, maybe pick up some squash, and then head back home before the rain hit. The nice thing about a whim is that there are no plans involved so you’re free to do whatever you want. The bad thing about a whim is that there are no plans involved which means something crazy usually happens. And so from the moment I stepped into the market, the skies opened up, and I was completely soaked. To the bone. Crap. I’m thinking, ”man I have a busy schedule, I’ve gotta do this and then I have to go there, and then I have to finish that, and WHY THE HECK DID I DECIDE TO COME HERE ANYWAY WHEN I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO RAIN!!!” I allowed that thinking for about two minutes before i stopped to realize, hey this really isn’t that bad. In fact, it’s nice. It’s warm out, everyone else is happy to be here. And guess what? I am too.
So I didn’t get to take any lovely pictures of the market with late-summer produce on display. My camera was safely ensconced in my bag. BUT once I slowed down and decided to absorb the scene, completely drenched and all, I managed to pick up a pretty amazing spread of produce that I laid out on my table here.
I got some beautiful heirloom tomatoes, red onions (which goes like water in my household), red peppers, cilantro, scallions, a small mixed berry crisp, and the absolute topper to my morning- GALA APPLES. Please see my earlier post about apples. If you haven’t read it, here’s a spoiler; I LOVE APPLES.
My upside today besides the lovely produce you see here? Sometimes the unexpected happens, but what matters is how we cope with it. With the unexpected comes some very pleasant surprises that can really make your day. In my case, it was the apples baby. 🙂
