The Evolution of American Nutrition?

Check out Ellice’s infographic about the American diet and her thoughts about the upcoming Food Day on October 24th. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Nutrition is greatly lacking in the Standard American Diet (SAD). ” Today’s Western diet or SAD generally refers to a total diet pattern (with multicultural variations) that includes excess consumption of calories from refined carbohydrates, fatty meats, and added fats and that lacks many nutrients found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. This dietary pattern, which also includes excess sodium intake, has been blamed for contributing to our current staggering levels of overweight and obesity as well as diet-related diseases and conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and heart disease”.  stated David Grotto, RD, LDN and Elisa Zied, MS, RD, CDN in a study released in 2010.
These facts are why I think October Unprocessed as well as Food Day are so important. What you eat should be based on more than taste, sure junk food tastes good, but if you start to realize the vast implications  of what you choose to put in your mouth and…
